Road Trip to Harrison Mills – Rowena’s Inn on the River

We’ve been hearing about Rowena’s Inn on the River for quite some time and hoped to someday drive out for a visit. Last weekend we finally made the trek and were taken back by the sheer beauty of the place. Nestled amidst beautiful mountains and ancient fir trees, this beautifully restored English style manor offers commanding views of the Harrison River. The estate has the atmosphere of understated elegance and rustic luxury, a place filled with BC history. It was well worth the drive out to Harrison Mills for a day of relaxation.

Summer in the City

Just returned from a wonderful week in Montreal!  We were down east finishing off our latest project – a loft in Griffintown.  Once again, we were taken back by the architectural beauty of the city as well as the warmth of the people.  With our friend Anthony (Café Myriade) as our guide, we were able to explore a few new places as well as hit a couple of our old favourites.

Hotel

Loved the location, as it was central and easy to access all areas of the city.

Restaurant and Cafe

Le Vin Papillon

2519 Rue Notre-Dame Ouest, Montréal, QC, H3J 1N4

Sat at a picnic table on the back outdoor patio – the only place to be.  These wings were only a part of an amazing late night dinner.  Teamed with a bottle of organic wine,  it had all the makings of a perfect summer evening.

Great space with delicious food to match.  The lamb tartare is to die for.

The server recommended the burger and it certainly did not disappoint.  Apparently, people come from all parts of the city for just the burger – now I understand why.

We had the pleasure of meeting chef/owner Derek Dammann who is a definitely a master at what he does.  Not only was the evening a culinary adventure, his stories and sense of humour added to the night.  Bar counter is the way to go!

Café Myriade

1432 Rue Mackay, Montreal, QC H3G 2H7
251 Saint-Viateur O, Montreal, QC  H2V 1Y1

What more needs to be said – the absolute best coffee in town.  The local dairy Société Orignal that supplies the milk for the drinks is deliciously rich and sweet – no sugar needed.  The beans come from 49th Parallel Roasters which is based in Vancouver.  If you haven’t tried their coffee or bought their beans, you don’t know what you’re missing.

             Vive Montreal!

Vive Montreal!

In Montreal this past week to begin work on a loft project for a client in Griffintown.  This area of the city with it’s old factories and converted lofts boarders the beautiful Lachine Canal.  We were fortunate enough to stay at the Hotel Gault in Old Montreal, a former cotton factory from the 1800′s.  The interior design and finishing were completed by yh2 architects, and is a wonderful mix of heritage and modern.  The city has a number of amazing restaurants, and we were lucky enough to be taken on a whirlwind culinary tour that included Chuck Hughes restaurant Le Bremner, as well as a few other local hot spots.  For our daily fix (twice sometimes) we stopped in at Cafe Myriade.  Started by acclaimed barista Anthony Benda – hands down the best coffee in the city.  Loved Montreal – phenomenal food, fantastic shops and great people.  We can’t wait to return and explore further.  Some of our favourites…

Hotel

Hotel Gault

449 Rue Sainte-Hélène, Montréal, QC H2Y 2K9

(514) 904-1616

The Gault is a boutique hotel housed in a five storey building built in 1871. The hotel sits in the heart of Old Montreal, two steps away from downtown. Contrasting the outside landmark, inside the Gault offers a minimalist design. This contrast brings incomparable communion of old-world comfort and luxury of modern design. Loved the original stone wall that served as the backdrop to the modern designed bed.
